One British species which I cannot regularly photograph in the wild is the Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) due to their protected status. Captive bred animals are exempt from protection under the Wildlife & Countryside Act and so I keep a small captive bred group at home (including an albino specimen).

Field Herping in Somerset
Yesterday I drove down to Somerset for a day's herping - with the specific intention of observing the introduced Iberian water frogs (Pelophylax perezi). I found over fifty adult and subadult specimens of P. perezi as well as N. Helvetica, B. bufo and L. vulgaris. The highlight of the day was having the fortune to observe a grass snake catching an Iberian water frog!
